How to set up a 2-2-3 custody schedule (and keep it straight)

What a 2-2-3 custody rotation actually looks like week to week, who it suits, and how to run it without a whiteboard.

A 2-2-3 rotation splits the week so both parents see the children every few days. It is popular with younger kids and parents who live close together, and it is also the schedule people most often lose track of, because the pattern only repeats every two weeks.

What the pattern is

In week one, one parent has Monday and Tuesday, the other has Wednesday and Thursday, and the first parent has Friday through Sunday. In week two the roles flip: the second parent takes Monday and Tuesday, the first takes Wednesday and Thursday, and the second has the long weekend.

That means each parent always has the same two weekdays, and the weekend alternates. Over fourteen nights the split is exactly seven and seven.

Who it works for

It suits young children who do better with short gaps between parents, parents who live within a short drive of each other and share a school, and households where both adults have predictable work weeks.

It works badly across long distances, with a parent who travels for work, or with teenagers who resent packing a bag every two days.

Where it goes wrong

Almost every 2-2-3 dispute starts the same way: someone counts the weekend from the wrong week. A single missed swap shifts the pattern, and from then on both parents are confidently reading different calendars.

Holidays make it worse, because a holiday that lands on a fixed weekday collides with the alternating weekend and the two of you have to decide which one wins.

Running it without a whiteboard

The fix is to store the rule, not the days. Say that the weekday pairs are fixed and the weekend alternates from a known starting week, and the rest of the year follows automatically — including next spring, which is where hand-typed calendars always run out.

In Custody Captain you enter the pattern once, add holiday rules separately so they take priority on the days they cover, and then subscribe your phone's calendar to the result. When you agree to a swap, it goes in as a one-off override that the other parent approves, and the underlying pattern stays intact.
